Screen printing is cheaper for large runs of the same design, because the setup cost gets spread across every piece. DTF is cheaper for small runs, since there’s no screen setup to pay for.
Screen printing generally lasts longer on high wash garments, since the ink bonds directly into the fabric. Quality DTF holds up well too, but screen printing is the more durable choice for staff uniforms worn and washed constantly.
No. DTF solved a real problem for small runs and complex artwork, but screen printing is still the most cost effective and most durable option for bulk orders of a single design, which is most of what breweries, restaurants, and event organizers need.
Setup cost per color makes it a poor fit for very small runs or highly detailed multicolor artwork. For those, DTF is usually the better call. For bulk runs of a clean design, those downsides mostly disappear.
There’s no strict minimum. You’re also welcome to ship your own shirts, aprons, or uniforms instead of ordering blanks through Sew NC. Mail them to the shop in Winston-Salem along with the artwork.
Vector artwork (.ai or .eps) works best for printing and embroidery. If all that’s available is a low resolution logo, send it anyway. It can usually be made ready to print or stitch.
